Call for Applications: Teaching Artist

The Writers Room Teaching Artist has a passion for TV and education. They are an experienced candidate who will develop, write, plan for, and implement a school year long curriculum focused on TV writing for Hollywood High School students. The Writers Workshop will focus on guiding students through the process of developing stories for television. Featured workshops could include Script Formatting, Season and Character Arcs, Theme Dialogue, Outlining, Writing a Scene, Rewriting, Voice Over, Production, and more. 

The Teaching Artist will be supported in each workshop by the students’ classroom teacher. The Teaching Artist will also work with Humanitas staff and community stakeholders to evaluate the program in accordance with 21st Century Learning Skills, and the standards and missions of both Humanitas and Hollywood High School, to ensure program objectives are met.

In addition to writing instruction, a collaborative, creative process like TV writing offers the unique opportunity for students to practice interpersonal communication, compromise, teamwork, active listening, and conflict resolution skills alongside the ability to receive feedback and offer constructive criticism. 

Humanitas is seeking a Teaching Artist who is warm, engaging, curious, and learner-centered; a person who meets the qualifications, core values, and professional expectations are detailed below. Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Film Production, Screenwriting, or Creative Writing, or equivalent professional experience required.

  • Established practice in the process of Screenwriting/Filmmaking and able to present a portfolio of both personal and student work.

  • Proven track record of a commitment to youth ages 15-18 with a minimum of two years teaching experience in either high school, after-school or community settings. 

  • Sustain and model a strong commitment to program objectives.

  • Participate in the ongoing planning, development, and assessment of program content.

  • Ability to respond to changes in the arts and education ecosystem.

  • Demonstrated experience in Curriculum Development.

  • Understanding and articulation of 21st Century Learning Skills.

  • A commitment to diversity and effectively working with diverse participants.

  • A commitment to equity and social justice for the youth of Los Angeles and beyond.

  • Ability to take the initiative and work well with others compassionately.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong collaborative skills

  • Self-starter 

  • Experience with WriterDuet and/or similar cloud-based screenwriting software. Microsoft Office, Excel, and Google Suite experience preferred.

Resources:

Location: Hollywood High School (1521 N. Highland Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90028)

Hours: Teaching Artist will teach one class per week; day/time dependent upon the adopted bell schedule and official master schedule of classes. 

Compensation: Compensation rate is set by the grant budget and commensurate with professional experience. 

Administrative Requirements:

Teaching artists must complete the Humanitas temp hiring process and the LAUSD Volunteer Process.
