DEVON BALSAMO-GILLIS BIO
LA native Devon Balsamo-Gillis was born to a monster-making dad and therapist mom, so was doomed from the start. With her father’s not-questionable-at-all guidance of his highly sensitive daughter, Devon developed a love for all things dark and twisted. But Devon also craved structure, so she started Karate and became the first girl Black Belt at her dojo. At 17, after graduating her all-girls Catholic school and presenting as a debutante, Devon dropped out of college: cue existential breakdown! She cobbled together a degree from four universities, said ‘see ya’ to societal expectations, and dove headfirst into examining the world through the lens of messy women characters who find resilience in their rage. Devon’s embrace of the unexpected continued when her son was born with Down syndrome, which sparked a passion for disability advocacy. Devon’s won the lottery twice (true!) but she hit the jackpot with her son’s extra chromosome.
