FOOD INSECURITY SURVEY

Humanitas established Groceries for Writers on May 8, 2023, to support feature film and television writers as they stand for fair pay and protections in the workplace. Since then, Humanitas has distributed over 1,500 e-grocery cards and 300 farm bundles, which include fresh produce and non-perishable goods, to WGA members and families.

The Groceries for Writers project indicates food insecurity, defined as a lack of consistent access to food for every person in a household to live an active and healthy life, is a not uncommon experience for writers and their families. This pre-dates the strike and will outlast it, so Humanitas is eager to envision direct aid work which helps remediate hardship.

This survey will help us understand the prevalence and impact of food insecurity in the screenwriting community, and will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.

We want as many professional and emerging screenwriters (whether they write features or teleplays) to take it while it’s available, so we can have as large a dataset, to create as complete a picture, as possible.

The survey will close at 11:59 PM PT on September 22.

We intend to publish the anonymized results in a subsequent piece, as we believe it’s important that this information is publicly available. This is only a small part of a wider discussion about the material needs of our neighbors, colleagues, and fellow citizens pursuing a career in the arts and entertainment, and how they are being met (if at all).

We will invite analysts, academics, researchers from all backgrounds–whether they work at a university, think tank, studio, network, labor union–to use this information to translate this conversation into actionable measures.
