The Writers Room Teaching Artist: TV Writing
Department: Programs, Non-Exempt Status
Reports to: Programs Team, ED
Since 1974, Humanitas has honored and empowered screenwriters whose work explores the human condition in a nuanced, meaningful way. We champion screenwriting projects that explore the human condition, as we believe the act of acknowledging our common humanity can be transformational for audiences. A strong desire to identify and nurture new generations of screenwriters dates back to Humanitas’s founding and led to the creation of annual programs like the New Voices Fellowship, College Screenwriting Awards, and, most recently, Industry 101.
Thanks to the generous support of the Muriel Pollia Foundation and SNAP Foundation, Humanitas presents The Writers Room, a TV Writing Workshop for high school students, as a part of our annual public programming. The Writers Room offers students an introduction to TV writing and the opportunity to act as the “staff” of a TV “writers room,” working together to pitch, outline, and draft a teleplay of a pre-existing series. The Writers Workshop concludes with a table read in front of an audience. The 2026-27 Writers Room will be offered in person at Hollywood High School once a week throughout the school year.
The first semester will be a Guest Speaker Series that provides an introduction to screenwriting, affording students the opportunity to get to know each other. The second semester will be the Screenwriting Workshop. The Writers Room Teaching Artist will serve as a showrunner for students who will act as the staff of a TV writers room, working together to pitch, outline, and draft ONE teleplay of a pre-existing series.
The Writers Room Teaching Artist has a passion for TV writing and education. They are an experienced candidate who will work with Humanitas and Hollywood High School staff to develop, write, plan for, and implement a 10-week curriculum focused on TV writing for 9-12th grade students. The Screenwriting Workshop will focus on guiding students through the process of developing stories for television. Past workshops have included Script Formatting, Season and Character Arcs, Theme Dialogue, Outlining, Writing a Scene, Rewriting, Voice Over, Production, and more.
The Writers Room Teaching Artist will be supported in each workshop by the students’ classroom teacher, as well as short-term Writer Mentors who support ABC storyline writing pods. The Writers Room Teaching Artist will also work with Humanitas staff and community stakeholders to evaluate the program in accordance with 21st Century Learning Skills, and the standards and missions of both Humanitas and Hollywood High School, to ensure program objectives are met.
