Writers Rooms 101

Last year, we discussed the various support staff roles within a writers room. Next we’ll take you further into the Writers Room: breaking a story, writing dialogue, executing someone else’s vision, and more.

Lang Fisher

Lang Fisher is a writer, producer, and director based out of Los Angeles, California. She is a co-creator, executive producer, writer, and director on Netflix’s hit comedy series, The Four Seasons alongside Tina Fey and Tracey Wigfield. The series just released its second season.

Prior to this, she co-created and executive produced the acclaimed Netflix series Never Have I Ever with Mindy Kaling which ran for four seasons. Additionally, she was a writer and producer on three seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, five seasons of The Mindy Project, and was a staff writer on the Emmy-nominated final season of 30 Rock. The 30 Rock episode that she cowrote, "A Goon's Deed in a Weary World" was named one of Variety’s “25 Best TV Episodes of the Decade." Before venturing into the world of sitcoms, Lang spent six years writing for the satirical news outlet The Onion for which she won a Peabody as a member of the writing staff for The Onion News Network. Lang is working under an overall deal with Universal Television. She is a graduate of Columbia University and lives with her child and her cat.  

Tracey Wigfield

Tracey Wigfield is a television writer, producer and showrunner.  She is the co-creator and co-showrunner of the comedy series The Four Seasons on Netflix.  She previously created and ran Peacock’s Saved by the Bell as well as the NBC comedy series Great News. 

Tracey got her start in television writing for NBC’s award-winning 30 Rock. During her six years on the show, Tracey rose from writers’ assistant to producer, and in 2013 she and Tina Fey received an Emmy for writing the show’s series finale, making her the fourth woman in Emmy history to take home that award. Tracey also won a Writers Guild Award, a Comedy Central Comedy Award, and received five additional Emmy nominations for her work on the show.

Lisa Muse Bryant

Multi-faceted Lisa Muse Bryant is on an overall deal at Universal TV, where she is currently a Co-Executive Producer on the Tina Fey series The Four Seasons for Netflix. During the course of her overall, Lisa has produced multiple series including Executive Producing and Co-Showrunning Kenan for NBC. Recently, Lisa was a Co-Executive Producer on Ted Danson starrer A Man on the Inside for Netflix, and an Executive Producer on Primo for Amazon Freevee from prolific producer Mike Schur. Prior to her time at Universal, Lisa was a Co-Executive Producer on Black-ish, where she spent three seasons and was nominated for an Emmy. Lisa also won an Emmy for her work on Marvel’s Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur and was nominated for a Humanitas Prize for writing the “Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow” episode of the acclaimed Disney+ animated series. A proud mom of four, Lisa’s background also includes working as a news producer while spending four years at VOA Television, the international news agency in Washington, DC.

Matt Whitaker

Matt Whitaker is a Writer and Co-Executive Producer for The Four Seasons on Netflix. He has previously written for other Tina Fey-produced series such as Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Girls5eva — and for late-night and awards show hosts including Larry Wilmore and Nikki Glaser. Outside of television, Whitaker's soulfully satirical writing has landed him on The Black List, on the GLAAD List, and in the pages of The New Yorker. He lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Dustin Fleischmann

Dustin serves as The Writers Guild Foundation’s Director of Events and Partnerships, creating unique and valuable public events aligned with the WGF’s commitment to offering educational programming to writers of all skill levels. Dustin previously served as the Writing Outreach & Engagement Coordinator at Netflix Animation, where he helped develop a staffing pipeline for emerging writers to break into animation writers’ rooms. In his spare time, Dustin writes at a snail’s pace, plays guitar, and enjoys solving the New York Times Crossword with friends over Discord.
