COLLEGE SCREENWRITING AWARDS FAQs

What type of material does Humanitas look for?

To learn more about what we look for in a script, you may wish to read this article on our blog about the art of screenwriting and exploring the human condition.

Are there page limits?

We do not have strict page length requirements. We do, however, generally advise that scripts fall into one of the following categories:

Single-cam 30-minute pilot (22 to 38 pages)
Multi-cam 30-minute pilot (52 to 58 pages)
60-minute pilot (44 to 65 pages)
Feature Film (90 to 110 pages)

I’m not a film student. Can I still apply?

Many of our applicants are enrolled in a film, TV, playwriting, or screenwriting track or program at their respective university, but any and all students are welcome to submit their material.

My student status has changed or will change during the submission period (leave of absence, graduation, etc.). Can I still submit?

Students must be enrolled in a college or university program located within the United States at the time of their submission. Students enrolled in some non-degree certificate conferring screenwriting programs organized by an accredited college or university (e.g.: UCLA TFT Professional Program) are also eligible. If you have questions about if a particular program is eligible, please contact Humanitas.

Do I need to be concerned about language or sexual content in my script?

No, it is not necessary to censor your material.

Does Humanitas own the rights to the scripts we submit?

No, you own your script. Humanitas makes no claim to ownership or exploitation rights outside of the internal purposes stipulated in our release form.

Do you accept submissions from a writing team?

Yes. Please only submit one application per team.

I’m an International Student. Am I still eligible?

Applicants do not need to be U.S. permanent residents and/or citizens, but must be enrolled in a college or university program located within the United States at the time of their submission.

My script is a genre piece (e.g.: fantasy, science fiction, horror, et cetera). Is it still eligible?

Yes. Scripts of all genres are welcomed.

Can I submit my spec script for a show that is currently on the air? Can I submit my spec script for a show that has previously aired?

No. We can only accept original material at this time.

Can you waive the submission fee?

Humanitas has a limited number of submission fee waivers it can offer annually. Please email us if the submission fee presents a barrier to entry.

Can I have an extension?

Unfortunately, no extensions can be given.
