HULU Gains Streaming Rights for No 1 Drama, 'The Good Doctor', written by HUMANITAS Trustee David Shore
For a second consecutive newfront, Hulu is announcing an SVOD deal for broadcast’s No.1 new drama. The streaming service has closed a deal with Sony Pictures Television for exclusive SVOD rights to ABC’s The Good Doctor. The complete first season of the series is now available on Hulu, and future episodes will become available the day after their original broadcast on ABC.
At last year’s event, Hulu announced a joint deal with NBC to share streaming rights to then-top new drama series This Is Us.
Another Sony TV drama hit, The Blacklist, previously sold to Netflix in a rich exclusive SVOD deal. But under a new business model adopted by the broadcast networks a couple of years ago, they demand in-season stacking rights to their series, and for corporate siblings of Hulu — NBC, ABC and Fox — that also includes making “stacked” in-season episodes available on the streaming platform. That makes Hulu the default-choice SVOD home for those series as Netflix asks for full exclusivity.
The Good Doctor – which recently wrapped its first season – was recently renewed for a second season. The series has become ABC’s most watched freshman series in 13 years and delivered triple-digit year-over-year time-period increases in Monday’s 10 PM hour for ABC in total viewers (+172%) and adults 18-49 (+162%).
The series stars Freddie Highmore, Antonia Thomas, Nicholas Gonzalez, Chuku Modu, Beau Garrett, Hill Harper, Richard Schiff and Tamlyn Tomita. The series is from Sony Pictures Television and ABC Studios. David Shore is writer and executive producer. Daniel Dae Kim, David Kim, Seth Gordon and Sebastian Lee are also executive producers.
The Good Doctor joins another popular ABC series streaming exclusively on Hulu in SVOD: Sony Pictures Television’s The Goldbergs.
