Queen Sugar, by HUMANITAS Woolfe Pack Member Ava Duvernay, Renewed for Season 4 by OWN

OWN has announced that acclaimed family drama Queen Sugar has been renewed for a fourth season, which will premiere in 2019.

“Under Ava’s creative vision and leadership, Queen Sugar continues to earn a well-deserved reputation for depicting nuanced characters, rich storylines and establishing an inclusive team that inspires and ignites much needed conversations about our society today,” said Erik Logan, president, OWN. “We are very proud of this show, the incredible cast, producers and crew, and can’t wait for more of the Bordelon family in season four.”

Along with the Queen Sugar renewal comes news that Anthony Sparks has been promoted to showrunner, taking over for season three boss Kat Candler. The rotating door of showrunners the show has had, normally a sign of creative unrest, is due to creator Ava DuVernay’s initiative to elevate writers and producers who have never held a showrunner position before. It’s similar to how Queen Sugar approaches its directing, with every season thus far featuring an all-female directing team.

The August 22nd finale of Queen Sugar is set at 90 minutes and finds Ralph Angel the recipient of unexpected news; the fate of the correctional facility revealed; Charley making a proposal on behalf of the farmers; and Vi and Hollywood celebrating their love. Thus far in its third season, the show ranks #1 in its time period across all cable in the network’s key women 25-54 demo in L+3, as well as Wednesday night’s #1 original series across all of broadcast and cable for African-American women.

The renewal of Queen Sugar follows the recent renewal of romantic drama Love Is ___, which was created by Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil.

Queen Sugar airs Wednesdays at 10:00 on OWN. You can check out a preview of tonight’s episode below.
