HUMANITAS Trustee Cindy Chupack Sells Comedy to ABC
Sex And The City alumna Cindy Chupack is working on another single-camera comedy about female friends. Inspired by Chupack’s real-life experiences, Dish revolves around three female friends in Venice, CA – one single, one married, one a single mother – who meet once a week at a restaurant called Dish to dish about life, love, career, and the myth of “having it all.” They do “have it all” among the three of them, just not individually. (Does that count?) Dish comes from ABC Studios and Karey Burke and Todd Holland’s studio-based Dark Toy banner. Chupack is writing and will executive produce with Burke and Holland.
Dish is inspired by a Sunday night yoga-and-dinner tradition on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice that Chupack had when she first got married with the late TV writer Padma Atluri and a couple of other friends. “Once a week you had this oasis of sanity and hilarity to keep you going,” Chupack said. “I miss those dinners, and with this show I wanted to resurrect their spirit, and Padma’s spirit.” (Atluri died of cancer in 2011 at age 39.) One of the three women in Dish, Anya, is inspired by Padma — specifically how she found out at age 28 that her mother would not be arranging her marriage and she could choose her own husband. So suddenly, with very little dating experience, it was up to her to find love.
“With this show, I want to call bullshit on one thing that seems to be the norm on television for shows about friends,” Chupack said. “My friends don’t live or work together. As my friends and I marry and have kids or move up or down in our careers, we increasingly have very separate lives, separate homes, separate jobs … and that’s created the problem I want to address in this show: Once you get the husband or kid or career — or all three — you don’t have time for friends, but you need them more than ever. So you have to make time, even if it’s just once a week, because it keeps you sane.” WME-repped Chupack recently worked on ABC’s flagship comedy, Modern Family.
