Arab Film Festival to Open with HUMANITAS Winner Cherien Dabis' 'May in the Summer'
The 18th Annual Arab Film Festival (AFF) has announced its highly-anticipated Opening Night selection. AFF will kick off on October 10 at the Castro Theatre with the San Francisco premiere of Director Cherien Dabis’ May in the Summer. The Opening Night celebration will feature a pre-screening reception at 6:00pm as well as an after party at the Churchill, with hors d’oeuvres and musical entertainment. As one of the biggest events of the year for the Arab community in the Bay Area, the AFF Opening Night film and celebration alone are expected to draw significant attendance.
“We are delighted to open our program with this new project from talented writer, director, and actor Cherien Dabis,” said AFF Executive Director, Serge Bakalian. “The film’s exploration of a young woman grappling with the intersections of her identity and desires perfectly introduces the heart of this year’s programming, which aims to challenge stereotypes about Arab and Arab American experiences and culture. Additionally, we look forward to broadening an ongoing conversation about the state of youth and children’s rights with work from both established and emerging filmmakers representing Arab communities around the world.”
