jkatims-mainNBC is prepping a new family comedy from Parenthood duo Jason Katims and Julia Brownell.

The network has handed out a script commitment for multicamera comedy The Walk-Up, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

From writer/playwright Brownell, the comedy is based on The Atlantic's July article "Two Couples, One Mortgage." Inspired by the growing real-world phenomenon detailed in the article, two 30-something couples — one with a baby on the way — decide to buy and live in a Brooklyn brownstone together, creating their own version of the modern urban family.

Katims and his True Jack Productions head of development Michelle Lee will exec produce Walk-Up alongside Brownell via the former's overall deal with Universal Television.

Brownell and Katims both have roots in the theater world and the duo have long wanted to try their hand at a multicamera comedy. For her part, Brownell was recruited to NBC's family drama Parenthood after her writing work on HBO's Hung and NBC's Broadway drama Smash. This season, she'll also work on Katims' About a Boy.

Walk-Up marks True Jack's third sale this development season. The banner, which is also pushing into cable, also has Stu Zicherman's romantic comedy set up at Showtime as well as a medical drama from Parenthood's Sarah Watson set up at CBS as a put pilot.

Parenthood returns for its abbreviated sixth and final season in the fall. About a Boy — NBC’s lone freshman comedy to earn a sophomore season — also will return in the fall.
