ABC Orders Pilot from HUMANITAS Board of Directors' Carol Mendelsohn
ABC is jumping on the “Serial” bandwagon, ordering a pilot for “The Jury,” a drama described in the vein of the popular podcast.
Centering around a single murder trial, the series follows the trial, as seen through the eyes of the individual jurors, exploring the biases and experiences that influence the jurors’ judgment and how their pre-conceptions change along the way.
According to ABC’s logline, “The Jury” feels like “Serial” meets “12 Angry Men.”
“The Jury” comes from co-writers Mark Bianculli and VJ Boyd (“Justified”). Boyd will serve as an exec producer with “CSI” veteran Carol Mendelsohn and her producing partner Julie Weitz. Bianculli will serve as a co-exec producer. Sony TV, where Mendelsohn is under an overall deal, is the studio on the project, which landed at ABC last summer.
The true crime genre has been hot as of late with “Serial,” HBO’s “The Jinx” and most recently, Netflix’s “Making A Murderer.”
Currently in development for a cable series is a “Serial” television adaptation, which is being produced by Fox 21 with exec producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Instead of following the actual story, the potential series will explore the experience of making the popular podcast.
“The Jury” is the third drama to receive a pilot order at ABC for the 2016-17 season, joining John Ridley’s female detective series “Presence” and “Marvel’s Most Wanted,” which is based on Adrienne Palicki’s “SHIELD” character Mockingbird.
