HUMANITAS Winner Larry Wilmore to Host White House Correspondence Dinner

Comedian Larry Wilmore will host the 2016 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, marking President Obama’s last romp with the Washington press corps while in office.

Carol Lee, a Wall Street Journal reporter and the president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, made the announcement Wednesday on Twitter. The dinner is scheduled for April 30.

“I’m beyond excited for this!” Wilmore said on Twitter.

Wilmore has had a bit of a whirlwind year. He began hosting a nightly satirical news show on Comedy Central last January and now he will have the distinct (and likely nerve-wrecking) honor of following the President with a comedy set at the springtime event—giving Washingtonians and their celebrity guests a taste of the biting commentary he delivers on the Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore.

As the host told TIME last year, his show focuses on the perspective of the “underdog” and often highlights people of color—whose presence, along with women, is notably sparse in late night hosting gigs.

As the former “senior black correspondent” on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Wilmore often makes a point of noting instances in the daily news cycle when racial and ethnic tension is front in center in the conversation. Given some of the Republican presidential candidates’ statements about Syrian immigrants, Muslims in America, and immigration over the past several months, there may be plenty for Wilmore to call attention to during his “nerd prom” set.

Saturday Night Live‘s Cecily Strong delivered some notable zingers at last year’s Correspondents’ Dinner, but the real show-stealer was the appearance of President Obama’s “Anger Translator” portrayed by Keegan-Michael Key of Comedy Central’s Key and Peele.
