Fans of darker (but musical!) takes on childhood stories have a lot to look forward to. With the Disney adaptation of Into the Woods out in theaters now, it looks like the Wicked movie is finally starting to pick up some steam.

Producer Marc Platt, who also produced Into the Woods, has announced that they are aiming for a 2016 release date with Stephen Daldry (Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close) attached to direct.

Winnie Holzman, who wrote the Wicked musical book, is confirmed as the screenwriter.

Wicked is the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, which tells the backstory of how a young witch named Elphaba became the Wicked Witch of the West of The Wizard of Oz. The musical premiered in 2003 and has become one of the longest-running and highest-grossing shows on Broadway. Idina Menzel, who voiced Elsa in Disney’s Frozen, starred as Elphaba in its initial production.
