HUMANITAS Board of Directors' John Wells to Direct 'Splinter Way' at Warner Bros.
John Wells is onboard to direct the motorcycle racing drama Splinter Way at Warner Bros., a film that will be written by Mitchell Akselrad.
Set in the lead-up to World War I, the story revolves around two brothers who set out to make history in the new live-fast-die-bloody world of motorcycle racing.
Akselrad, a writer-producer on Turn on AMC, becomes the latest hot TV writer to make the transition to the big screen. Wells has not identified his next directing vehicle yet, and Splinter Way has now become a strong contender.
Zachary Studin, an executive at John Wells Productions, brought the project to the director and will shepherd for the production company.
Jon Berg and Nik Mavinkurve are overseeing for Warners.
Wells is best known for his long, successful career in TV as the executive producer and showrunner of ER, Third Watch and The West Wing. But in 2010, he made the leap to directing features with the Ben Affleck starrer The Company Men. He most recently directed a pair of films for The Weinstein Co., August: Osage County and an upcoming restaurant-themed drama starring Bradley Cooper (that film was formerly dubbed Chef but dropped the title to avoid confusion with a Jon Favreau-directed project). Wells is repped by CAA.
